Foxnetech started its journey, in the heart of Tripura, with lots of love from peoples around. So we, the Foxnetech team, have come out with a small tribute towards our people. To be more marked by exactness, a tribute towards all the people tribes of Tripura. Foxnetech today comes with Tiprasa ethnic people and its culture. 

Tripura, a land of diverse culture and serene landscapes is home to the 19 indigenous tribes. Each tribe holds its own beauty and distinct cultural norms from one another. Among all the tribes, Tripuri’s hold prime position owing to their numerical superiority. They mainly inhabit the western and interior part of Tripura.

The Tripuri (also Tiprasa or Twiprasa) people are the original inhabitants of the Kingdom of Tripura in North-East India and Bangladesh. The Tripuri people through the Royal family of the Debbarmas ruled the Kingdom of Tripura for more than 2,000 years until the kingdom joined the Indian Union in 1949 until then, the state was in full fledged ruled by the Tripuri Kings.

 

History (Chini Laibuma/kokborok):-

The people from Tripura are considered to be part of the Tibeto-Burman ethnic group. Originally they migrated from near the upper courses of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers (in present-day Western China). They had left China long before the Sui dynasty came to power. At the time of migration, they were animists. So, it may be reasonably assumed that they migrated before 65 AD, the year Buddhism was introduced in China. The common reference to these people as “Kiratas” and “Cinas” in the early Sanskrit texts of India unmistakably indicates that they came down to the Assam valley long before the dawn of Christian era.

Tripuris entered their present country through its north-eastern corner, settled there and then gradually expanded their settlement and suzerainty over the whole of Tripura. They were able to expand their influence as far south as Chittagong, as far west as Comilla and Noakhali (known during the British period as ‘Plains Tipperah’) and as far north as Sylhet (all in present Bangladesh). The ruling dynasty passed through several vicissitudes of history and ruled Tripura for several centuries. During the British India rule, The Tripura Dynasty was not included within the British India and was a fully fledged state. On 14 October 1949, Tripura was merged into the newly independent India.

 

Language (Chini Kok/kokborok):-

The Tripuri people mainly speak dialects called Kokborok, the standard dialect of the Debbarma tribe spoken around Agartala and the second official language of Tripura. There are estimated to be 1,000,000 speakers of the dialects of Tripuri in Tripura, others being in Mizoram and Assam in India and Nepal, Sylhet and Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh.

Dressing (Chini Kanmung Chumung/kokborok):-

Tiprasa peoples wave their traditional dress and clothes by their own, it’s also believed that peoples also grow to wave threat from their own cultivation though it’s not seen now, believed to be practiced a few centuries back. Traditional clothes of Tripuri men and women are Dhoti, Rignai (chamathwi) and Risa respectively. They also choose to wear certain ornaments made from silver and gold that include various types of bangles, rings, chain etc.

 

Food Habits (Chini Chamung/kokborok):-

The main food habit of Tripuri peoples is rice. Rice is generally served with curry. The traditional food habit of Tiprasa does not have any system of adding oil or adding any other kinds of spices. Regular Tripuri traditional foods include Awan Bangwi, Wahan Mosdeng, Chakhwi,   Muya Awandru. Bamboo shoot and Berma ( a special type of dry fish) happen to be on the favorite list of Tripuri people. Since Tripuris mainly reside in the hilly slopes, Jhum cultivation is one of the agricultural practices performed. Native agriculture practices include cultivation of Guria (special type of rice) rice and other vegetables in the hilly terrain. With advancement in modern agriculture, the Jhum practice has largely decreased and cultivation of rice took over in the plains.

Religion and Festival (Chini Mwtai Atai/kokborok):-

Tripuris are mainly divided into two types based on religion- The Hindus and The Christians. According to the 2001 census, the majority of the Tripuri people are Hindus. There are various festival and occasions celebrated by Tripuris, right from January till December. The traditional celebration starts with Buisor (Chaitra Sankranti), then comes Garia Puja followed by Kharchi Puja (Considered as Totem of Tiprasa Dynasty), Ker Puja, Oshaa Mwtai(Durga Puja), Hungrai(Celebration of New Year ) and Tring or Bisi Kwtal (New Year).  Along with all this, various other festivals such as Good Friday, Christmas, Budha Purnima, Durga Puja are also being equally celebrated among the Tripuri peoples.

 

Music and Dance (Chini Rwchapmung Mwsamung/kokborok):-

Everything in Tiprasa culture, either happy or sorrow moments, festival or celebrations etc are all expressed and done by music and dances. Jadu Kolija, is a classical type of Opera, sang by Tiprasa people. This type of music is composed of a special bunch of emotions and lyrics, speaking about the situation it is all about. Chongpreng, Toktwitreng, Sarengi , and Sompton are some of the traditional musical instruments.

Tripuri dances include Garia Mwsamung(Dance during the celebration of Garia Puja) and Mamita  Mwsamung.

 

The Tripuri people have a rich historical, social and cultural heritage which is totally distinct from that of the mainland Indians. Our distinctive culture – as reflected by dance, music, festivals, management of community affairs, dress and food habits – has a strong base.
