Growing up, everyone is told that, “Drugs are bad for you,” time and time again. Now as a kid you don’t understand the reason behind it, but listen to your authority figure regardlessly. I remember being told this my entire life and even to this day. But as I got older I realized that people would still use drugs even though it is illegal. I could never understand why someone would go against the law and jeopardize their life just to use drugs.
Well the drug that I am talking about is marijuana, and surprisingly it is all around us. Marijuana is ever referred to in today’s media mainstream media sources that people enjoy like music, movies and TV shows. Now being a young adult and having my own personal experience with the drug and knowing its effects on others, I wonder why is it not legal?
Marijuana can be made into paper, paneling, plastics, clothing and thousands of other useful products. The seeds can be used to make flour, cooking oil and cattle feed. This environmentally friendly plant grows without herbicides, nourishes the soil, matures quickly and provides high crop. It is the number one biomass producer in the world. Ten tons per acre in for months! It could be an excellent fuel producing crop.
Demonizing and criminalizing some drugs, while approving others without rational criteria, is clearly irresponsible, unreasonable and deceitful. Why are marijuana users criminals while alcohol and tobacco users are not?
Alcohol and tobacco causes illness and deaths wheras marijuana has never killed anyone. There is overwhelming evidence that marijuana can safely relieve pain, nausea and vomiting caused by various illnesses. In fact, marijuana is patently safer than many commonly prescribed drugs.
Marijuana is a good drug to use for someone who has cancer, Tourette’s syndrome or epilepsy.
It is because a person with cancer can be unhealthy and have really bad nausea, diarrhea and stomach pains. “If they smoke medical marijuana, there is 83% chance that they get healthier and their nausea, diarehea and stomach pain decreases,” says Scott Paplowski, a 39-year old who is the oldest living survivor of Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer.
Prohibition takes away our right of ownership over our own bodies and gives this power to the government. Does any other human right make sense if we don’t have control over our own bodies? There is a word for people who don’t have ownership over their own bodies: slave!
Despite 70 years of independence and 1 trillion of tax paying money spent trying to stop, not robbey, not rape, not murder, not even shoplifting, but mostly trying to stop adulta from using marijuana. Perfectly non-violent men and women thrown in jail for using a harmless drug, when there are rapist, pedophiles and murderers walking around freely.
This abomination continues unabated. It is because our government is addicted to the taxpayers. The government wastes trillions year after year pretending to fight an enemy created and sustained by prohibition itself.
Marijuana is a linchpin of the drug war. Legalizing marijuana will sound the death knell for this devastating crime against humanity. While many people think marijuana is an “unhealthy drug”. I believe that it is a way to help society when it is in need.
